Human beings do not relish the thought of their own demise. This is evidenced by their inability to look upon death as a natural end to life or to acknowledge their own and others’ mortality. This is why so often their burial ceremonies are billed as “a celebration of life.”
It should come as no surprise then that a bookshelf that can eventually double as a coffin comes with its own controversy and stirred some attention on social media.
Designer William Warren created the bookshelf, which can be taken apart and reassembled as a casket, custom-made for the shelf/coffin’s owner upon the death of said coffin/shelf’s owner.
According to Warren’s website, “These shelves are designed to last you a lifetime. The wood will colour, the surfaces will mark and stain and over the years and the furniture will become a part of you.”
If you simply provide Warren with your build and height, he will send you the measurements and instructions to build your own “shelves for life” unit.
While the shelves are a novel idea, it is hard to envision the person who would be keen on the idea of walking by a reminder that one day their heart will stop beating day after day. The constant reminder that one will someday occupy a space six feet under the ground is certainly enough to keep one grounded.
